In one sense, the first Exodus didn't work. The Old Testament tells a story about the need for a greater, second Exodus -- not just for Israel, but for all people to come out from under the exploitation of an enemy far more oppressive than the Egyptians.
The story of Cain and Abel isn't about anger management or how not to treat your brother. It's a story of two covenants – two brothers embodying two ways of living and relating to God.

Genesis 1 says God created the world in 6 days. Now, are these literal or figurative days? Your answer to this question is not as important as understanding how the New Testament informs our reading of the creation narratives.
For Augustine, Christ was the key for understanding the Old Testament:
