Unlike basically every other place with a film industry, Los Angeles and California don't actually need to adopt crony subsidies—it desperately wants to stay here. We just need to massively speed up permitting and build a ton more housing to lower the cost of living.
To say Spielberg ruined movies, you have to pretend that everyone from Cecil B. DeMille to D.W. Griffith didn't exist and then pretend that there were lines around the block for Barbara Loden's Wanda until one man deviously showed the world that sharks are pretty cool.
For the first time yesterday, I experienced the new @alamodrafthouse QR code ordering system and I can tell you it’s truly awful. Rather than making ordering food and drink more efficient, it actually adds steps to the process AND if you want to order additional items during the film you HAVE to open your phone. No, your cute reference to that irony in your How To Alamo video doesn’t negate how ridiculous this is. Please don’t cut corners with your staff and revert back to physical menus and order cards.
My takeaway is a negative one: this tells me that Movies will soon learn the lesson of Music: they will no longer spend the time/money to DEVELOP new stars…they’ll shift that labor over to the creatives themselves, & only fund artists who’ve ALREADY created their own fanbases.
youtuber directors are the new corman school (learn on the job, preposterously young, generally low-quality output). film twitter directors are the new cahiers gang (seen everything and do very little, contrarian, paralytically articulate about movies)
I think the French New Wave fits this, theres an assumed solemnity to auteurism and intellectualism but a lot of them are actually really goofy, campy , and satirical
Los nenes IA no entienden el cine, no hay forma de que vean al encuadre como decisión artística porque conciben el mundo como un software que debe ser "mejorado"
It seems clear to me that Los Angeles needs to move towards aggressively penalizing landlords and building owners that keep all of these residential and commercial spaces empty, these parasites need to be boiled in oil ideally but taxing the shit out of them works too
This is also not a new phenomenon. When films screened in Cinerama and Cinemascope in the 50s, not all theatres were equipped for the formats. Many movies went out in multiple aspects to fit specialist and standard screens. Notably, Disney photographed 'Lady and the Tramp' TWICE
I think a lot of people (Barry included) are missing the point here that, essentially, in Hollywood, you have to make LION KING to sustainably pay your bills.
That’s not a career.
