❗️⚠️🌐 - Climate agencies are increasingly warning of a potentially historic super El Niño developing later in 2026.
According to the latest forecast from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center issued on May 14, 2026, there is an 82 percent chance that El Niño conditions will emerge between May and July and a 96 percent chance they will persist through the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026–27.
Several climate models now indicate a roughly one-in-three chance that the event could become very strong—commonly referred to as a “super” El Niño—with sea-surface temperature anomalies exceeding 2 degrees Celsius above average in the equatorial Pacific.
While substantial uncertainty remains about peak intensity, some projections suggest this could rank among the strongest events on record, potentially rivaling the severity of the devastating 1877–1878 El Niño that triggered widespread famines and contributed to tens of millions of deaths across Asia, Africa, and South America.
Scientists emphasize that a strong El Niño would likely amplify extreme weather patterns worldwide, including severe droughts in Southeast Asia and Australia, heavy flooding and landslides in parts of South America, intense heatwaves, and disruptions to global agriculture and water supplies. These conditions could also push 2026 toward record global temperatures when combined with ongoing human-caused warming.
Modern forecasting tools, early-warning systems, and improved disaster-response capabilities are expected to significantly lower the risk of a 19th-century-scale catastrophe.
Even so, experts caution that vulnerable regions in the developing world could still face substantial humanitarian and economic challenges if the phenomenon intensifies as projected.
