@jbcarmody I apologize - that was me over interpreting your context, which is exactly what I’m trying to get you not to do, so I appreciate you calling me out on it!
@jbcarmody True point. We all have competing interests, and I applaud you trying to expose those. I think listening and engaging without jumping to conclusions based on one’s own perspective is an important exercise
@jbcarmody I actually know nothing of ERAS other than trying to figure out how to advise students each year, so I have no answer here about the fees. It does seem like a lot, though, I agree with you!
@jbcarmody I agree ERAS needs many fixes. I disagree with you taking things to the extreme conclusion that all medical schools squander tuition $$ and the AAMC is some evil genius behind it all. I see lots of thoughtful people here working hard to solve complex problems, and I feel hopeful.
@jbcarmody Totally true, and maybe it couldn’t. I also know that if a school wants a surgeon to teach students how to be a surgeon but then pays them a pediatricians salary for those hours, they’re not going to have many skilled future surgeons. Changing one thing affects hundreds more
@jbcarmody Partly, yea, but most CME funds are actually supported by patient care revenue, and, oh yeah, medical schools are also supported by patient care revenue from their hospital partners. So again, I don’t disagree, but funds flow is not one-way as you suggest!
@jbcarmody I wouldn’t dismiss the big tech money for this meeting - they’re not pharma but the vender hall is very full of Ed tech companies that certainly contribute as much as pharma or device companies to others. Anyway, you and I don’t disagree, it’s just always more complex, you know?
@jbcarmody I was actually at that session yesterday, although it was not totally clear, my interpretation is that the data they gathered DOES support caps, so that was promising. I have appreciated your advocacy over the years, thanks for doing the work of trying to make them transparent!
Old man @ me while texting inside a building:
Him: “you might not be old enough to remember a girl once got killed walking into a bus while texting!”
Me: “ good thing there’s no bus in this building!” but thinking, smart phones are about 12 years old. I look younger than 12?
@ctmarcinak @uwsmph@UWMadison Aren’t they amazing! And so fortunate to have @WiscSurgery residents and faculty to teach them so well! @UWHealth is a really incredible place for teaching and learning
So grateful that this kind of leadership is what allowed a robust discussion about a virtual option for #ASC2022 to happen, and proud of my trainees virtually presenting this afternoon! Check them out in the Education and Endocrine II quick shot rooms. @WiscSurgery
