A rattlesnake doesn’t need to chase you across the wilderness to hurt you.

You only have to get too close.

Sin works much the same way.

We convince ourselves:

“I can handle it.”

“I know where the line is.”

“I’m not actually doing anything wrong.”

But Scripture doesn’t tell us to see how closely we can walk beside temptation.

It says:

“Flee also youthful lusts…”
— 2 Timothy 2:22 KJV

Flee.

Some things aren’t meant to be negotiated with.

The enemy rarely begins by asking you to abandon God completely.

He whispers.

Compromise here.

Justify this.

Hide that.

Feed the anger.

Entertain the thought.

Take one more step.

And eventually something that once disturbed your spirit doesn’t bother you anymore.

That’s dangerous.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”

Discernment means learning to recognize the rattle before the strike.

That relationship pulling you away from Christ.

That secret habit becoming stronger.

That bitterness you’re beginning to enjoy.

That voice telling you God’s boundaries don’t really matter.

That compromise you’ve renamed “freedom.”

Don’t wait until the venom is already flowing to admit you were standing too close.

But here’s the Good News:

If you’ve already been bitten by sin, Jesus still saves.

Run to Him.

Confess it.

Repent.

Get back into His Word.

Ask for help.

Cut off whatever keeps pulling you toward the snake.

God’s grace isn’t permission to keep playing with poison.

It’s the power to walk away from it.

What warning has God been putting in front of me that I’ve been getting dangerously comfortable ignoring?

Heavenly Father,

Give me discernment to recognize temptation before it becomes captivity.

Show me where I’ve become comfortable with things I once knew were dangerous.

Expose compromise, secret sin, bitterness, pride and every deception trying to draw my heart away from You.

Give me courage to flee what needs fleeing and strength to surrender what needs surrendering.

And when I stumble, keep me from hiding in shame. Lead me back to the cross, where mercy is greater than my failure.

Make me sober.

Make me vigilant.

Make me difficult to deceive.

And teach me not merely to hear the warning—

but to obey it.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ,

Amen. ✝️

Hear the rattle.
