On Saturday, I addressed Nigeria’s First Lady, H.E Mrs Aisha BUHARI, Governors and other eminent Leaders at the Aso Rock Villa. I assured them that my generation will not be used to snatch ballot boxes or perpetuate electoral Malpractise in this coming election.

An MIT professor gives a student $5 and says: send any amount to a stranger in this room. Whatever you send triples. The stranger decides how much comes back.

Rational answer: send nothing. You lose every dollar you trust.

Most students send almost everything. Most strangers return more than half. The math says keep it. The room says otherwise.

Then the professor runs a different game. Same cash. Same room. One student splits. The other can only accept. No rejection. No consequences.

The offers collapse. Not to zero. But enough to see the line between generosity and strategy.

One year a student got Swiss chocolate instead of cash. She was lactose intolerant. Gave away 100%. The professor noted it. The class laughed. Nobody noticed the point.

She had zero cost of generosity. The moment giving costs nothing, everyone is generous. The moment real money hits the table, the room divides into the same two groups every semester. People who send first. People who wait.

Labor, capital, arbitrage, insurance. Four ways to make money. All four require the same opening move.

You send value before you see a return. A paycheck after the work. A deposit before the interest. A bet before the edge. A premium before the claim.

The lecture is free. MIT filmed it years ago. The game runs every semester. The split barely changes.

Sending first is free. Knowing if it comes back is the part that costs something.

On March 28, 2008, Lehman Brothers asked Warren Buffett for up to $5 billion. He said no. 171 days later, the bank filed the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Buffett spent Friday night reading Lehman’s filing. On the cover, he listed every page that raised a question. By the end, he had enough reasons to walk away.

On September 13, Barclays executive Bob Diamond called Buffett in Edmonton. Barclays wanted Berkshire to insure Lehman’s trades. The protection would last until shareholders could approve a takeover.

Buffett could not price the risk over the phone. He asked for the terms by fax. He returned to his hotel around midnight. No fax. Barclays had left a voicemail on his flip phone instead. Buffett’s daughter found it the following summer.

Lehman filed for bankruptcy on Monday, September 15. Eight days later, Berkshire put $5 billion into Goldman Sachs.

This deal could be calculated. The preferred shares paid 10% a year. Berkshire also received warrants to buy another $5 billion of Goldman stock at $115 per share.

Munger called the urge to end uncertainty quickly Doubt-Avoidance Tendency. Buffett kept the answer at no until he could explain the risk and calculate the price.

Before an urgent decision, ask two questions. Can I explain the downside? Can I calculate the terms? If either answer is no, do not let the deadline decide.

In his 1995 speech The Psychology of Human Misjudgment, Munger laid out 24 standard causes of misjudgment. He revised the text in 2005 and the list grew to 25.

I joined Governor Sanwoolu, Minister Tunji Alausa, Fmr Minister Wale Edun, DG NIMC and other members of the Lagos ruling elite at the Book Launch and Movie Premier to celebrate the 60th Birthday of Princess Aderemi Adebowale - National Coordinator of the National Home Grown School Feeding Program.
