Again, Ohio St will never take the field feeling they’re outmatched in talent, size, speed, etc. They have ball players. So why did they fall short last year? Situational play calling and execution offensively. It’s why I am still so high on IU- that staff is proven. They get it.

In comes Arthur Smith and what I noticed at practice today (besides Chris Henry Jr looking like a pure alien), was that NFL background shining through.

I think this OL has a chance to take that next step and compete for a Joe Moore award. I think the run game will take a major stride this season, with the major reason being the playbook and play calling.

In the NFL, you need to have the ability to run your 10-15 base plays out of every single formation and personnel. The run game should look like the play action game. Zero pre snap clues.

They’ll have that with Arthur Smith.

Jeremiah smith is obviously the best player in CFB… but he’s now taking the field without a proven alpha WR2 like he had with Tate and Egbuka. Don’t mistake me, they’re loaded at WR still, but many of the guys are unproven and I’m not ready to say it’s 1:1 picking up where Tate left off… at all..

So defenses will be locked in on #4. Rather than having another elite WR to take the pressure off him, I anticipate the run game and physicality at the LOS being the driving force of the offense as a whole and of course getting #4 the ball.

Julian Sayin throws a beautiful ball. He has Olympic archer level accuracy and his decision making at practice, in particular red zone and 3rd down periods, really shined through. Reports are he’s added weight and feels stronger- good for him.

His next evolution is to willingly tuck the ball 2-4 times a game. When the field opens up for him, keep your eyes down field, but Sayin would really benefit from scrambling more often when the opportunity presents itself.

OSU has a terribly tough schedule, so it will be all hands on deck to navigate this season, and Sayins legs will be called upon.

In summary, Ryan Day has the program humming. I’ll be on the call week 1 for the game against ball state. #1 team in CFB on @BigTenNetwork

If it were up to me, I am keeping all 4 QB’s. When I look at Mason Rudolph, I see experience and reliability as a proven backup/spot starter (when needed) behind Aaron Rodgers. For the first time in his career he finally has competent, adaptive coaching (of which I think will elevate his game further and help him see things he couldn’t see before). Additionally, he has familiarity with the organization and the ability to stabilize the offense if needed. People don’t understand how valuable it is to have a veteran as a backup. It’s a luxury, man. This way, you continue to let Will Howard and Drew Allar develop, both of whom have zero NFL experience playing against top tier defenses.

This is important to keep in mind if something were to go wrong late in the season where meaningful football games were approaching.
