In cross-examination, a lawyer often asks a series of precise, closed-ended questions to get the witness to commit to a clear version of events under oath. The goal is to “lock in” that version so the witness cannot later soften, qualify, or walk it back without looking evasive. Once the witness has answered “No” multiple times in clear language, that testimony is fixed on the record.

In Officer Chris Bagley’s cross by Kathy Nester (during the July 2026 preliminary hearing in Utah v. Tyler Robinson), this is exactly what happened regarding who was present when he went to the Losee Center roof:

• “When you got up to the roof that afternoon, was anybody around that was law enforcement?” → No.
• “Nobody on the roof?” → No.
• “Nobody on the stairway?” → No.
• “Nobody on the walkway?” → No.

These are not vague answers. They are repeated, specific denials that no one else (especially law enforcement) was with him in the relevant areas during the time he went to the roof and observed the screwdriver and gravel disturbance.

Later in the same cross-examination (after a recess, as shown in the second clip), Nester confronted Bagley with his own body-camera footage. The exchange went roughly as follows:

Nester noted that the bodycam showed another individual in civilian/plain clothes who appeared to have a gun going with him to the Losee building.

Bagley then admitted: he did not know exactly who the person was, but the person had a badge, and Bagley had brought him along “to back me up as I ran up the stairs to make sure I had somebody with me.”

This is the “admission of the companion.” The earlier denials and this later statement are inconsistent on the central point of whether anyone was with him.

This is the lecture that professional bettors and hedge fund analysts studied.
