If I can give expecting/new parents any piece of advice, it would be to read to your child every day from the moment they are born.

I even read aloud to my kids during my pregnancy. 😂

But just read! At least one book at bedtime, more if you can work it in.

"Well, my kid is [age] and I haven't done that."

Start now. Whatever the age, read to your kids. Point at all the words. Explain what's happening in the pictures if they aren't old enough to understand. Discuss what's happening in the story to encourage comprehension.

Dedicate just 10 mins a day to reading.

10 minutes a day multiplied by 365 days is just over 60 hours a year. If you did that, in four years you will have logged over 240 hours of reading time.

Reading is a vital skill and it's falling by the wayside in a big way. Make it a priority because it makes such a big difference. The earlier a kid can read, the earlier they can start really understanding the world around them and how to navigate it.

Early reading is also a very strong indicator of future success and is associated with a host of positive outcomes. The gift of literacy is one of the most precious things you can give to your babies that will carry them far in life.

This reminds me so much of my experience after Ivan. Our roof and house fell, but the kitchen floor and counters were made of concrete, so the stove and gas tank remained. For weeks, we cooked outside.
