For 2 years in Paris, I worked with one of the world's leading Neurosurgeons. Everyone including the BSc student interning at the lab called him Marc.

The first day I spoke to Funso Doherty - i asked, "how would you like to be addressed?"

He said: "F.D is fine".

Wisdom demands.

Marc is French, Funso is Nigerian. Tony Elumelu is Nigerian.

Our cultural designs are widely apart - widely apart to the extent that, in a lot of family households, siblings don't call older siblings by name.

Now, it is a different case when you're speaking about people in third person. Sometimes it's just easier to use the first name in that conversation and keep it moving, like we do on social media all the time. Context matters and wisdom demands.

Another extra nuance I'll add is:

Wisdom also demands to pay attention to our people address each other around, especially if you're new in that environment. I'll give you another example.

My first year in Italy, I was in Milan. My supervisory head, a globally acknowledged professor, preferred to be called Danielle. That's what we all called her.

The year I moved down South, I noticed that everyone called my supervisory head, "Professor" instead of her first name. Wisdom demands that you pay attention.

It's not hypocrisy if Tony Elumelu responds to "Tony" abroad without problem then corrects his subordinate back home on how he preferred to be addressed. He wasn't even rude. Cultural context matters and in one context, he's the head of the organization. Even abroad, there are a lot of conservative leaders who don't operate on first name basis.

Of course, as the world progresses, we begin to culture mix & local organizations begin to adopt western communication structures - the lines can get blurred because we still have a lot of conservatives.

Again, wisdom demands that - you ask first:

"How would you like to be addressed?"

Mr. Tony himself has been in many corporate environments and is very right to correct her that way. The proper thing is to call him with his title(s) and let him be the one to tell you to just call him by name.
