The fun and the struggle of giving birth to 10,000 little Comrades
Mega🧵about the creation of the Call Data Comrades.
I spent waaaay too much time writing this thread, so dig in if you dig it 😀
🧵Part 1/3
Hubris
When I kicked off the Comrades project in September 2023, I was boxed in by limitations right out of the gate. I wanted to release them as Ethscriptions, and with call data space being costly, I had to shrink them down as much as possible. So, I turned to the trusty classic pixel art canvas.
However, I wanted to make it more tangible than the classic pixel art we’ve all come to love so much. My goal was to create something that didn’t look like it was made of pixels but instead appeared as a solid object. That meant no outlines and the clearest forms possible.
Initially inspired by the art of the Nodemonkes, various PIV experiments, and Prorok’s concrete art—and after some rough early attempts—I took the obvious route: I tried to make it 3D. But I wanted to take this to the next level.
I aimed to do it in a more consistent way than had ever been done before. My vision was for every 32x32 pixel Comrade to become a fully believable 3D sculpture, which came with a lot of challenges.
Let there be light
How do you cram a believable 3D figure into a measly handful of pixels? - it’s all about the light! Nailing the shadow colors ate up way more time than I’d care to admit.
Shadows tend to be more blue-ish, colder. So very often, adding a hint of blue to the shadows made them much more believable.
But the color was not only important for the shadows; I also wanted the Comrades to pop hard af. I took the iconic Ethscriptions green, C3FF00, as a basis and started building around that. One of the most iconic combinations in this collection is probably the one you can see in this picture.
This turned out to be almost the same basic color scheme that Chopper used for his Ethereumphunks marketplace, more than a year before we even talked about launching and listing them on his MP.
At some point last year I set out to contact Chopper. And to be honest, I was stoked that he even took the time to read through the monster wall of text I sent him. It only took him about a week or so to answer, and his first sentence was: “You owe me half an hour of my life” 😄
In Dorkness we trust
But the most challenging colors proved to be the non-colors—the different shades of black.
I was fine-tuning them almost until the very last day, finally ending up in a place where the black background works with the black Comrade base models and with the shadow side of the black base models; where black drop shadows work with the front side of the black base model; and where the black traits and their shadow sides work with both the black base model and the black background. 🥴
This also laid the groundwork for the YONDER collection, which in itself became a celebration of shades of black.
