And the disturbing part is that this is no longer an isolated story.

In rural Morgan County, Georgia, residents say their well water turned muddy after years of blasting, excavation, and construction tied to Meta’s 2.5 million sq ft campus.

Families say appliances started failing.
Some now rely on bottled water.
Locals say the problem has worsened over time.

Meta denies responsibility, citing independent groundwater studies.
But the EPA has now agreed to investigate after mounting pressure.

At the same time, another Georgia data centre issue surfaced.

In Fayette County, residents reported weak water pressure during drought conditions.
Investigations later found a nearby QTS facility had consumed nearly 30 MILLION gallons through mismanaged utility connections.

Bloomberg found that around two-thirds of new AI data centres since 2022 are being built in already water-stressed regions.

In Michigan, towns began freezing approvals after a $16B Stargate AI project pushed through despite local opposition.

In South Africa, communities are now challenging Equinix data centres over water use, electricity demand, and environmental risks in a drought-prone region.

The AI boom is often framed as digital.

But the reality is physical:
