A former water company boss has been handed a £270k bonus despite a parasite outbreak that sickened more than 140 people and caused a public health scandal.
Susan Davy stepped down as chief executive of Pennon, the group that owns South West Water, last year. She received the six-figure sum despite the board initially deciding to withhold the bonus following a public outcry.
South West Water pumped drinking water to thousands of homes in Devon containing cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite that causes a highly infectious gastrointestinal illness.
The outbreak in May 2024 impacted approximately 17,000 homes and lasted more than 50 days.
The parasite left four people requiring hospital treatment and caused more than 140 confirmed cases of sickness and diarrhoea.
South West Water was fined a record £1.8m after pleading guilty to supplying water unfit for human consumption, following a prosecution brought by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. The company offered a “full and unreserved apology”.
Former environment secretary Steve Reed introduced legislation in February 2025 to prevent water companies paying out bonuses to executives if they fail to meet strict environmental and consumer standards.
However, Davy’s payouts were reinstated after guidance from regulator Ofwat over how the new rules would be applied.
Davy, who claimed the parasite outbreak caused her “sleepless nights”, received a £270,000 bonus for 2024-25 and an £87,000 bonus for 2025-26, The Telegraph reported.
That was in addition to a base salary and benefits of £561,000 for 2024-25, and £473,000 for the nine months of 2025-26 before she left the company.
With pensions and share allocations, Davy earned more than £1m in 2024-25.
Allies of Andy Burnham, who is widely believed to be the next prime minister-in-waiting, have said the new MP for Makerfield wants to bring ‘the essentials of life’ – including water – back into public control.
More than four in five Brits support nationalising the country’s water companies, YouGov polling from earlier this month revealed.

The police leap into action: they handcuff the student in case he said something racist, then watch as he drowns in his own blood.
Classic ‘country in decline’ syndrome — bribe folks with taxpayers/borrowed money to win their votes while wealth creation stalls and public services decline. SNP used to do this more subtly. Now it’s quite blatant.
Blame the Parents as much as you want. But it seems they broke no laws! And there will always be bad parents, so the system needs to be in place to adequately deal with the results of that.
The problem I see in all these inquiries is that NOBODY is held accountable. Promises are made to improve or improvements have been made. And then the situation repeats. That’s what happens when nobody is held accountable. History repeats itself.
Every measure you list involves spending wealth.
You don’t list one measure that creates wealth.
And if you don’t create wealth you will soon run out of it to spend, which is already happening (hence all your extra taxes and borrowing).
The UK should be energy independent, it's people should pay pennies for fuel but unfortunately due to deliberate destruction of our own oil and gas and idiotic climate policies that other countries ignore, our country is reliant on fuel purchased from Norway and USA.
The UK buys Norwegian fuel drilled from the north sea, as our own fields are shutdown due to governments refusing new licences and taxing existing operations at 75-100%
Personally I would apply zero tax to our own fuel as this would boost the economy, but then again the genius Milliband knows better.
Norway is a vital energy partner, supplying nearly half of the UK's natural gas, largely via pipelines.
While both nations operate in the North Sea, they hold separate, distinct, and highly regulated, sovereign continental shelf areas.
Norway is the UK’s largest pipeline gas supplier, providing around 31 billion cubic meters (Bcm) in 2024, representing roughly 50% of UK consumption.
Norway operates a state-supported energy system, but sells gas to the UK at global market rates rather than at production cost, which has contributed to higher energy prices.
Looking at our debt since the Fabian/Uniparty assumed office in 1997 their nearly 30 year reign of terror has destroyed the economy of the UK.
From pointless wars to net zero energy policies that have created the highest industrial electricity prices in the developed world, resulting in a 33% drop in energy-intensive output since 2021.
The UK is shackled with debt and over population that has stretched the countries resources to breaking point.
Without Net zero taxes and subsidies the entire industry isn’t viable.
energy bosses explain that even if wholesale bills were halved or even zero, Our bills will be 20% higher in 5 years.
Brilliant strategy Ed, just brilliant 🤡

Very strange that West Ham owners have chosen to borrow £124million from a company called Rights & Media Funding Ltd.
