The Government forecasted that 37,000 children would pay the price with this tax over 7 years. We are already at 30,000 fewer pupils--AT LEAST.
The @ISC_schools Census data is for ISC member schools, which isn't 100% of independent schools. It also includes independent special schools, which aren't affected by VAT.
The damage is clear. The Government must scrap this tax. #EducationNotTax

@apsamuelson@Glazertwalker I don’t mind them being charities - it encourages them to do wider good - no bad thing.
I’d like to see vouchers for schools so we all have a real choice about the school our kids attend. Weak state schools can be left to close, better schools would grow. Parent power 💪
@richardcutting9@hilscie@MichelleDewbs So Let’s go back…You said… no evidence these kids are moving to state…
there are now 30k fewer in independent schools.
- birth rate gives you a little
- home school
- international alternatives
The rest went where, if not state?!
@apsamuelson@Glazertwalker So, during a cost of living crisis, what should a sensible government do?
A) Make it harder for families by adding extra taxes to their bills?
Or
B) Not do that?
@richardcutting9@hilscie@MichelleDewbs Even if you separate the transfer to state assumption from demographics, it still doesn’t answer the core point you make where did the ~30,000 go if not into state schools - as forecast?
@AllisonPearson And like many govt-provided services, it doesn’t match what’s already quietly delivered for FREE (like really actually FREE!) by charities like the Greggs Foundation — which provides around 14 million breakfasts, with little publicity.
