Traditional Treatment: The IRS traditionally treats cash tips, credit card tips, and tips made through apps or other electronic payment methods the same for tax purposes.
Eligibility & Limitations: This deduction is for workers in occupations that customarily receive tips (e.g., servers, bartenders, hairstylists) and is available for tax years 2025 through 2028. There's an income phase-out for those earning over $150,000 annually ($300,000 for joint filers).
No Payroll Tax Break: It's important to note that the bill does not provide a payroll tax break. This means workers will still be subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes on their tips, even if they claim the income tax deduction.
In essence, while the IRS has historically treated all forms of tips as taxable income, the new "No Tax on Tips" provision aims to reduce the tax burden for many tipped workers by allowing a deduction for reported tips, regardless of whether they were received in cash or electronically.
