Meryl Streep is known for her powerful acting performances, and frequently described as "the best actress of her generation."

But what many people don't know is that she considers herself a "shy" and "private" person.

That's why it stunned so many people in the audience when she made a political speech critical of Donald Trump during her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes in 2017.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me…It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and the capacity to fight back…I still can’t get it out of my head…This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing…When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

Despite winning 3 Oscar awards for acting and racking up a record 21 Academy Award nominations, Trump would later take a shot at her on Twitter, criticizing her for being "over-rated."

But her words resonated with millions and, in light of his many documented disrespectful remarks about wounded veterans, it is clear that Meryl Streep was correct in her assessment.
