@capsaveathought @EmperorBigD The Cell Saga isn't an exception. Goku passed Fat Buu to Goten and Trunks despite being able to beat him himself, and he rejected the safer Potara fusion against Kid Buu. He could've taken the easier path in both cases but chose not to, just like with Cell.

If his goal was simply to become stronger than Cell, he would've gone into the HTC with Vegeta instead of Gohan

If he really went all out, he would've trained in the time chamber again, Instead he put his faith in Gohan. Choosing not to return after dying proves he wanted Earth to stop relying on him.

@dbs_10_10 Goku holds back constantly if he really felt like the Earth was in extreme danger he could've gotten strong enough and reached SSJ2 he said he wasn't strong enough to beat cell and left the fight to Gohan for the same reason he didn't kill Fat Buu he wanted the next gen to do it
