In this intro piece I talk about the challenges of discussing race and racism at all; the limitations we all bring to the subject; the defensive tendency—particularly characteristic of White churchgoers—to minimize the problem; and why the colorblind parenting ideal is a mistake.
This is a big one: For many years, my efforts to understand racism and to explain it to myself and to others have been a work in progress. At long last, I’m ready to begin sharing my work with others. Feedback, commentary, corrections, criticism welcome!

there is nothing the man will not lie about, no crisis he will not try to exploit, and no lie is too absurd or too pernicious for Trump himself or someone in his near orbit to float
A devastating, deadly hurricane hits the U.S. during a presidential campaign. One candidate for president plays politics with the hurricane, spreads dangerous disinformation about the hurricane, and repeatedly lies about what the government is & isn’t doing. The other candidate for president does what she can to help facilitate federal assistance to hurricane survivors and the impacted communities.
Should be an easy choice on Nov 5th.
2. A referendum on elections: Why defeating Trump is the best move for the US and the GOP (this would be the anti-Trump polemic)

Very pleased to see that my two election-related posts are now the top two most popular things I’ve written on my new Substack! With the election looming, if my approach interests you, I hope you’ll check them out—and, if you think they’re worth reading, share them with others.
1. Reflections on voting as a pro-life Catholic: Lengthy musings on my political thinking over the years. (I’m calling this a preamble to my anti-Trump polemic. Yes, a preamble!)

@LizzyBPemberly@mfjlewis You don’t understand how telling people, including scrupulous Catholics, who are struggling with mental illness that their problem is really demons does harm? Really?
This was a tedious, painstaking, brutal article to research and write. It was hard to listen to Fr. Ripperger drone on for hours about demons, conspiracy theories and his superstitious worldview.
But people (especially bishops) need to be informed.

So yeah, TWO DAYS after posting, my Substack piece on voting as a pro-life Catholic became the most popular thing I’ve written there. (The follow-up piece on defeating Trump is about to break into the top 5!)

This suggests to me (along with the feedback I’m getting from many directions) that a lot of US Catholics are fed up with being told that there’s only one right way to vote in every election, that voting any other way is a sin, etc.
Follow-up to “Reflections on voting as a pro-life Catholic”: Longread on why I believe that the defeat of Trump in 2024 is in the best interests, not only of the country, but also of the Republican Party, the pro-life movement, and American democracy
