One of the biggest misunderstandings in crypto is thinking $XRP, XRPL, and Ripple are the same thing.
They are connected, but they are not the same.
And until you understand that difference, you will keep misunderstanding what the XRP Ledger was actually built for.
Here’s the breakdown you need:
XRPL (XRP Ledger) is the blockchain itself.
The infrastructure. the network.
The system where transactions happen.
It is open-source, decentralized and publicly accessible for anyone to build on.
No single company owns it.
$XRP is the native digital asset running on this network.
It is used to move value across the ledger and also pay the tiny transaction fees that help prevent spam on the network.
Ripple is quite different.
Ripple is a private company that builds products using XRPL and XRP.
They use the network. they do not own the network.
That part matters a lot because many people wrongly assume Ripple controls the XRP Ledger itself.
It doesn’t.
If Ripple disappeared tomorrow (which isn't going to happen), XRPL would still continue running because the ledger was not built as a company product.
It was originally created in 2012 by three developers:
David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto, who believed moving money should be as fast and efficient as sending messages online.
And that idea is still the core of XRPL today.
Now tell us, what new thing did you learn about the XRPL?
Cross-border money transfers to and within Africa are among the most expensive in the world.
According to World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide data, the average cost of sending $200 to the region stood at approximately 8.4% in recent quarters, compared with a global average of around 6.2%.
Costs vary sharply by corridor and amount. Intra-African routes often prove particularly expensive. For example, the Tanzania to Uganda corridor has recorded average costs as high as 61% in some periods, while sending money from Senegal to Mali has averaged around 25.7%.
What do you think are the main reasons it’s so difficult to move money to and across Sub-Saharan Africa, and what needs to happen to change this?
One of our team members from South Africa just started a new chapter.
