Henrietta sat curled up by the window, chin resting against her hand as rain tapped softly against the glass. For once, Versailles was quiet.

But the second those huge palace doors shut behind her, the feeling dropped a little.

All the gold, the mirrors, the staring eyes… it felt like a prison pretending to be pretty.

Her smile faded only a bit.

“Glad to be back,” she muttered quietly

Harriet walked back into Versailles with rosy cheeks, wind tossed curls and the biggest smile anyone had seen on her in ages. She looked happier, lighter, almost giddy.

It was far too deliberate, far too regular to be mistaken for anything else.

Her breath broke with it.

She tried to steady herself, but the force at her back kept her caught between him and the door; firmly held, pressed forward, only to be drawn back again.

The candles flickered, as if conspiring with her secret. She straightened, smoothing her hands, heart fluttering with gentle anticipation.

The new gown settled around her in gentle folds of ivory silk, the bodice shaped carefully to her form, the neckline trimmed with pale lace that brushed her skin like a whisper.

She lifted her chin slightly, studying the way the fabric followed her breathing, rising, falling {+}

Henrietta exhaled, slow and deliberate, and allowed herself the indulgence of a private smile.

“If only you knew,” she murmured to her reflection, voice barely stirring the air, “how carefully I have chosen this… and for whom.”
