Today, 17 August, marks 41 years of marriage for my parents, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and my mother, Hajiya Hadiza Isma El-Rufai. They became best friends before their twenties in Ahmadu Bello Univeristy (ABU). A few days ago, it was the anniversary of Mallam and our very own Aunty Asia, his second wife. It seems Mallam has a thing for August. On a serious note, forty one years of choosing each other through different seasons of life. Forty one years of shared dreams, difficult days, joyful moments, sacrifices, growth and memories that only two people who have walked such a long road together can truly understand.

Marriage is not measured only by the years that pass, but by the life built within those years. And 37 years is a beautiful testament to the journey my parents have shared. Mama, an extraordinary writer and novelist and a brilliant architect, has always had a gift for turning life and experiences into words. Today, I think of the 41 year story she and Mallam have written together, not on pages, but in a life shared. The role of Minister of FCT as she served as First Lady and his role as Governor of Kaduna as she served as First Lady is secondary to what they share and continue to share. Happy 41st wedding anniversary Baba and Mama. Thank you for everything on behalf of all your children. Yasmin and Hamza will be proud.

May Allah continue to bless your union, deepen the love and friendship between you, and grant you many more years of good health, peace and happiness together. May the years ahead be even more beautiful than those behind you.
