As part of its Post-Disaster Poverty project, Deep Poverty Network sheds light on the struggles of families forced to relocate to Istanbul following the February 6 Maraş earthquakes, which caused significant loss of life and property.

This project, carried out under the Digital Transformation Fund implemented by the Civil Society Support Foundation in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Turkey Mozaik Foundation, involves in-depth interviews with earthquake survivors. Through these interviews, Deep Poverty Network examines how survivors experience poverty in the aftermath of the disaster and explores the specific challenges they face.

@bianet_org , Deep Poverty Network General Coordinator Şeyma Batman highlighted the intense survival struggles reflected in these interviews:
“It’s the women who hold the households together. Without the chance to grieve their losses, they found themselves in a fierce fight for survival. They lost their families, neighbors, friends, homes, and savings overnight, and now they’re trying to stay afloat in unfamiliar cities. The high rent prices in Istanbul, the struggle to make ends meet, the fight to find jobs, and the adaptation challenges their children face at school… And on top of all these difficulties, there’s the earthquake that they say they ‘can never forget.’”
Batman emphasized that the project focuses on interviews with women from affected households. The data collected highlights how these women experience disaster-induced poverty in Istanbul and identifies the types of support they need. She added that this data will be shared with stakeholders in the field to raise awareness and drive action.
