FOMC minutes from the Sept. 15–16, 2026 meeting are out.

The Committee unanimously raised the federal funds rate 25 bp to 3.75–4%, citing solid growth, a labor market near maximum employment, and inflation still well above target.

Key takeaways:

Real GDP expanded at a solid pace in the first half of 2026, with further pickup expected, driven by firm consumer spending and strong business investment (especially AI-related). Unemployment held at 4.1% in July–August; wage growth moderated to around 3.1–3.3%.

Total PCE inflation edged up to 3.8% in August (core 3.4%), partly from energy prices, lingering tariff effects, and AI-related goods. Staff see inflation declining later in 2026 and reaching 2% only in 2029, with upside risks from energy, geopolitics, and demand outpacing supply.

Most participants expected another hike by year-end, data-dependent. Policy was viewed as not fully restrictive. Longer-term inflation expectations remained anchored near 2%; short-term expectations stayed elevated.
