In newly diagnosed - the oral short acting antihypertensives are used to treat this hypertensive urgency
The three antihypertensive drugs are
1.Captopril - 25 to 50 mg
2.Clonidine - 0.2 mg
3.Labetalol - 200 - 400 mg
CHOICE OF THERAPY - It depends on two conditions like
1.wether the person is previously diagnosed and treated - In this case
Restart the antihypertensive in non adherent patients / Increase the dose of current medication
2.Newly diagnosed or untreated
MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSIVE URGENCY - The main goal while treating this condition is to reduce blood pressure conservatively but not aggressively
WHY NOT AGGRESSIVELY - Rapid reduction of blood pressure may result in serious complications like M.I,STROKE and sometimes even death
DIFFERENTIATION - These types are mainly differentiated by presence or absence of end organ injury
HYPERTENSION URGENCY - If the blood pressure is >180/120 without any end organ injury / damage.
HYPERTENSION EMERGENCY - If the blood pressure is >180/120 with end organ injury.
HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS - If the blood pressure is >180/20mmHg then this condition is termed as hypertensive crisis.
TYPES - It is of mainly two types like one is hypertensive urgency and another one is hypertensive emergency
HYPERTENSION - It can be defined simply as persistently elevated arterial blood pressure.
