The character switch animation in GTA 5 was a loading screen wearing a costume.

That Google Earth zoom-out everyone remembers bought the engine time. Jumping from Michael to Trevor meant dumping one side of the map and streaming an entirely new one off a PS4 hard drive that read about 100 MB per second. Rockstar couldn't hide the wait, so they made the wait cinematic. Players spent 13 years admiring a progress bar.

The PS5's SSD reads 5.5 GB per second. Over 50x faster. That's the entire reason the seam disappeared.

The deeper change is what happens to the character you're NOT playing. In GTA 5, the off-screen protagonist barely existed. The game invented their day and dropped them into scripted vignettes when you came back. In GTA 6, Lucia keeps driving while you lean out the window as Jason. Switch mid-firefight and your partner keeps shooting, because when the two are together, both run live at once.

That's a doubled simulation load on top of the densest open world Rockstar has ever built.

The best engineering in games is the kind you never see. It took a full console generation to delete one camera move.
