This is why, if we keep consumption low, we will #DefeatDayZero in 2018.
The response from the residents of Cape Town has been phenomenal. Individuals, businesses, agriculture all united to protect this scarce resource.
RETWEET to thank each and every #DayZero hero!
Want to know where the water's coming from?
There is over 180 MLD (million litres per day) coming online between May and July.
In 2019, this will grow to 220 MLD, and in 2020 up to 350 MLD.
#DefeatDayZero#DayZero
Once the summer season hits again however, the risk of #DayZero arriving in 2019 is high. This is why it is vital that we keep our consumption low!
We must accept and appreciate that we have a new relationship with water. #DefeatDayZero
[THREAD] How can #DayZero be defeated in 2018?
1. The response from Cape Town residents has been phenomenal.
Water consumption has reduced by 60%: from 1.2 billion litres per day in Feb 2015 to 510 million litres per day over the last week. #DefeatDayZero
3. Cape Town's winter rains:
The City's augmentation schemes, and Cape Town residents pushing #DayZero past July means that should we get good winter rains, we will #DefeatDayZero in 2018.
Maimane: "Augmentation projects will be adding an additional 190 ML per day to the supply system by the end of this year; growing to 220 ML in 2019; and plan to ramp it up to 300 ML in 2020."

Maimane: "The 60% reduction in consumption is an incredible achievement, and outperforms many other cities across the world which faced severe droughts โ including Sao Paulo, Melbourne, and the State of California."
#DefeatDayZero
Maimane: "I am happy to announce today that provided we continue consuming water at current levels, and we receive decent winter rainfall this year, Day Zero will not occur in 2018. This means the taps will stay open in 2018!"
Well done to all Cape Town residents! #DefeatDayZero
