Purvis Young’s paintings hang in the Smithsonian & the Met. So when his heirs told me attys had taken his final 1800+ works as their pay -- without an appraisal -- and that one court paper even listed their value as $1 apiece, I wondered how that could be. https://t.co/mypZaASd36
The president of the Florida Senate just used her opening-day speech to pledge to keep Florida one of the 10 states that will not extend Medicaid health insurance to more low- and mid-income people.
"Medicaid expansion is not going to happen in Florida," she said.
BREAKING: scientists confirm global warming is now accelerating well beyond the high risk threshold for tipping points and towards levels that can smash organised human society by 2029- 2038 🧵
I usually avoid reading climate science at night. Broke my own rule tonight reading this latest commentary from James Hansen et al. It is not good news and should compel journalists to cover this, world leaders to get off their asses, and all of us to

NYC right now. Rainfall intensity is increasing as the planet heats as scientists have warned. We are heading for irreversible breakdown as we’ve been warned about for decades
"Brazil could record its highest temperature in history during this winter heatwave."
Read that again. It's still winter in Brazil and they are approaching all-time record hottest temperatures for *any* month in *any* year.
We are in a climate emergency.
If you are on the fence about becoming a climate activist please, please, please come down onto the right side of history. The movement, and the planet, need you so incredibly much. You are more powerful than you can ever know. Every activist started out as someone on that fence.
Republican Miami Mayor Francis Suarez says the quiet part out loud: "People are often saying that democracies can no longer solve big problems and I have traveled to autocracies where it seems like they're solving a lot of big problems and being very innovative..." #BecauseMiami
James Hansen: "Eventual global warming due to today's GHG forcing alone - after slow feedbacks operate - is about 10°C."
1,100 billion tonnes of human CO2 already in the atmosphere *weighs more than everything on Earth built by humans* and heats this planet to ~6°C. The other GHGs add a further ~4°C.
There is no way to get the GHGs including CO2 that weighs more than everything on Earth made by humans out of the air. Even if there was a way, there is no time.
Regardless of future emissions, concentrations of GHGs will continue to rise for centuries, with CO2 possibly peaking at double or even triple today's level.
This is because of the extreme sensitivity of amplifying feedbacks to the direct warming effect of human GHGs.
At today's level of 560ppm CO2-equivalent, the direct GHG warming effect of 1°C eventually causes an additional 9°C of warming by feedbacks.
Although it will take centuries and millennia for the Earth to fully adjust humanity's explosion of GHGs, a majority of the remaining ~9°C equilibrium warming can be expected to occur over the next 100 years.
Defies belief. This is the ocean on our agricultural midlatitudes. There's a delay of 3 or 4 months, but the land surface warms more than the sea surface. Worth getting prepped while things are still relatively stable. See my pinned tweet.
“We need a revolution against all economic activity and jobs that are completely useless, and which result in the destruction of nature and the destruction of everything about us that is human” #bullshitjobs#degrowth#ClimateCrisis#amwriting
The greatest carbon capture machines in the world fine tuned over many millions of years are called Trees and they help to create the very air we breathe, a home for wildlife but humans cut down over 15 billion Trees every year and think they can survive in a world without Trees
Antarctica has a gaping gap in its sea ice cover, about the size of Argentina or 4x state of Texas. The especially troubling part is scientists aren't sure why this is, but it could be a signal of "a change of state." https://t.co/PAYCKxq2ST via @JacKnutson
Since the 1860s the science community has understood that adding more carbon dioxide & other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere would warm the climate. In 1938, @GuyCallendar first linked the burning of fossil fuels to the observed rise in CO₂ levels & global temperatures.
It's not hyperbole to say the outlook is bleak for Florida corals. It's too hot, too fast, for too long.
Some lowlights I heard this week, amidst a never before seen effort to bring more nursery corals ashore than ever before. 🧵

This red line might as well be from another planet. We are living the last days of Earth and human civilisation as we had come to know them. A tiny bit of ice left in the Arctic is currently keeping temps from rocketing. Once it goes, things will be simply surreal #ClimateCrisis
Okay let's finally get real.......
We must now all be in "Emergency mode".......if your not, your not comprehending just how deadly climate collapse is.
The planet you think your safe on, doesn't exist......
