Joel, congratulations on finishing the Daniel commentary. I’m looking forward to reading it.

I’m working through my own commentary on Daniel, and your 2013 blog post on Daniel 7 became part of my source material as I studied the relationship between Daniel 2 and Daniel 7.

My current conclusion is that the kingdoms of Daniel 2 are not the same referents as the beasts of Daniel 7.

Daniel 2 explicitly gives us successive kingdoms:
“After you shall arise another kingdom…” — Dan. 2:39
But Daniel 7 never explicitly identifies its four beasts with those kingdoms. And Daniel 7:11–12 especially caught my attention: the fourth beast is destroyed, while the other beasts have their dominion removed, yet their lives are prolonged.

That pushed me to seriously consider whether Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 share a similar four-part structure while describing different referents and a different prophetic horizon.

Since you raised this possibility yourself back in 2013, I’m very interested to see where you landed in the completed commentary.
