A-League Men Referee of the Year and Football Queensland Head of Advanced Match Officials Alex King, sat down with Football Queensland General Manager of Leagues and Officials Slater Asnicar to discuss the need for clubs and communities to shift their mindset to backing young referees, supporting their development, and moving away from criticism that drives officials out of the game.

Delfina Shakespear took the field for the last time in Saturday's game between Canberra United v Brisbane Roar. Delfina has announced her retirement from national league duty with this final match, her 125th at this level, equalling the record for ALW assistant referee appointments. Delfina's first match came back in 2013 in Canberra v Brisbane, the same match-up as her last.
Danielle Anderson also took to the field for the last time in Friday's game between Adelaide United v Wellington Phoenix, announcing her retirement. Danielle made her debut in the 2011 season and featured in over 100 matches.
Congratulations on a fantastic career, Rachel & Anastasia! 👏
Rachel Mitchenson took the field for the last time in Friday's game between Brisbane Roar v Perth Glory. Rachel has announced her retirement from national league duty with over 90 matches as a referee, debuting back in 2013, following multiple matches as an Assistant Referee.
Anastasia Filacouridis also took to the field for the last time in Saturday's game between Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory, announcing her retirement. Anastasia made her debut in the 2017/18 season, and featured in 78 matches as an assistant referee.
Maria Patrikis made history in 2026 when she became the first female Australian FIFA futsal referee - and the first Victorian to do so since the 1990s 👏

During the #PacificAusSports Football Tour, Australian match officials trained and officiated alongside referees from Fiji and the Solomon Islands, sharing perspectives, approaches and matchday experiences.
From joint appointments in Lautoka and Honiara to a combined theory session with Solomon Islands referees, the focus was on building connections, consistency and a stronger refereeing community across the Pacific.
Congratulations to ACT Referee Harrison Cracknell on his debut appointment to the A-Leagues, being named as the Fourth Official for the match between Canberra United and Sydney FC on Wednesday 10 December!
