The US needs more Republicans to be less "concerned" and more courageous to stand up against "a Republican Fascist as much as a Democrat Communist." Senator Susan Collins has the credibility to lead the way.

Excellent essay: “The MAGA movement promised to make America great again. Instead, it has achieved something remarkable: it has made the United States of America—the most powerful nation in human history—uncool, untrustworthy, and unwanted.”
"Nailed it! Just like David Baldacci." Best review ever! Thank you Valarie, poolside at Vidanta, San Jose del Cabo. For a great beach read, I have more! All modeling the style of David Baldacci. Six Dale Hunter Thriller novels and the Kid from California series.
An unsolved kidnapping and the disappearance of a 16-year-old in my old home town of Kimberley, BC, in 1969. I'm incorporating that true story into my novel #7 of the Dale Hunter Series, RIVER OF REVENGE and trying to push Draft #1 from chapter 3 to 43 and a satisfying ending.
How do you think Americans are feeling about their ignorant incompetent ego-maniac President compared to our articulate, intelligent, competent, experienced, and wise PM Carney??OMG! Imagine if Canadians had made a similar bad choice & left Trudeau in power or elected Poilievre.
“The obvious question raised by Carney’s speech is this: Is the United States irreversibly lost? Can we not recover from our self-inflicted wound? Is it beyond the capacity of the U.S. to once again be an admirable nation and a responsible great power?”

Aislin does it best. Doodling for our collective mental health. We're all dreaming, hoping, and praying for better headlines. Unfortunately, as PM Carney says, waiting and hoping is not a strategy. We need to be prepared for the worst.
Face the fear, don't tempt fate. You can walk on water! But my worst nightmare is dying while trying to swim out from under the ice. So stay away from thin ice and open water. Keep close to shore so you can escape with only cold wet feet. Words of wisdom from your Uncle Ralph.
I am afraid Putin will be quietly pleased with the results of the European Council. He has effectively intimidated the EU - and the UK - into dropping an excellent plan to fund Ukraine. The reparations loan would have liberated huge sums from Putin’s frozen assets in a way that was morally and legally watertight. It would have given Ukrainians the ability to defend themselves for years to come.
As things now stand the plan for a €90bn EU loan is better than nothing - but still a distant second. Chancellor Merz of Germany and Ursula von der Leyen of the EU Commission deserve congratulations for their leadership, and their willingness to stand up to Putin. It is a great shame that they were ultimately thwarted by other EU countries including, shamefully, some countries who were actually invaded by Russia in the last century.
As for the UK, where have we been? We have about £15bn of Russian assets in London and yet Starmer has said nothing. We could have led the campaign. We have sat on the sidelines. It is not too late for us to act.
Adding your name to a memorial already named in honor of a great man doesn’t make you a great man. Quite the contrary. Putting your name on top of someone else’s doesn’t mean that people will speak of you in the same breath as the other man. Putting your name above another man’s name on his existing memorial… What is that about? Truly? What’s that about? Do you want people to speak the names as one? Dig down deep. What are you trying to say? I’m really interested. There is no other president who would do this. None. Zero. In fact, it’s not even legal. Congress named the performing arts center as a living memorial in 1964, and only congress can change that law.
This will always be the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Art. A great man would have said to his hand picked board, “Thank you, but the building already has its name. Let it stand. Let it be. I don’t need that.” But then again…

Living the life of Hemingway! Cuban cigars and mojitos and books. In Mexico, not Cuba. Hemingway recommended, "Write drunk, revise sober." I need to be sober for both. But I did enjoy the mojitos and cigar!
My coworker got promoted over me.
He was worse at coding. Better at politics.
I wrote better code. Fixed more bugs. Shipped faster.
He talked in meetings. Took credit. Played the game.
He got the promotion. I got "keep up the good work".
That's when I realized: corporate rewards politics, not performance.
Six months later I quit. Started freelancing.
Now I make 3x his salary. No politics. No credit-stealing. Just solving problems and getting paid directly.
The best developers rarely get promoted. They get used.
Companies optimize for compliance and communication. Not competence.
If you're technically great but politically terrible, you'll never win at corporations.
Leave. Build your own thing. Get paid for your actual value.
Sales are great at the Knowlton Literary Festival with 200 readers here for the presentations by Louise Penny and friends. First time at a writers conference I actually sold more books than I bought!
