I use sulfur.
If you want to use sulfur safely to battle these pests, keep it on the surface or on your body:
Surface Dusting (The Yard): Use a spreader to lightly apply powdered or pelletized sulfur across the top of your lawn or turf. This creates a surface barrier that disrupts their metabolism and forces them out of the area.
The "Sulfur Sock" Trick (Personal Protection): To keep them off you while gardening, fill an old tube sock with powdered sulfur, tie it off, and whack it against your boots, socks, and pant legs. The fine dust layer is an incredibly effective natural shield against chiggers.
If you want a natural pest-preventative that actually belongs inside a soil mix, use Diatomaceous Earth (DE). DE consists of microscopic, fossilized aquatic organisms. It does not alter soil pH or harm plants, but its razor-sharp edges physically slice through the protective outer shells of any soil-dwelling pests, dehydrating and killing them naturally.
