When the level of threat goes up as it has done in the last few years, then we have to make whatever adjustments are required to the rest of our spending to keep our people safe.
At the end of the Cold War, we made assumptions about how dangerous we believed the world would be and we cut back on spending on defence and security releasing funds that we called “the peace dividend” into other areas and priorities.

When I was a student, my first political job was with Alistair Darling (who went on to be Chancellor of the Exchequer for the Labour government). I then worked with Charles Kennedy, Menzies Campbell & Jim Wallace (Lib Dems). All of whom were decent and highly intelligent men, genuine public servants & principled politicians. But since then, something rather grim has happened to the standard of our politicians. Very few of our politicians today are anywhere near the standards of many politicians from the past. It’s one of the reasons why we are in this enormous mess.
