Russia may be preparing to strike southern Europe with drones launched from merchant ships, El Mundo reports.

US intelligence reportedly warned Spain, France, and Italy that one of them could be targeted. Launching from the Mediterranean would extend Russia's drone threat to NATO's southern coast.

The reported plan would hide small Gerbera drones in shipping containers. Their explosive payloads could temporarily close an airport or port.

FPV drones owning the battlefield.... the end of an era,

FPV drones owning the battlefield was always going to be a short-term situation. The reason is straightforward: armored vehicles moving forward now carry enough electrical power and mounting space to field automated, optically guided kinetic anti-drone systems directly on the vehicle. These systems can be cued by early warning, so vehicles and their automated defenses know where incoming FPV drones are before they arrive. The drones themselves can be tracked optically and acoustically, picked up by the sound of their engines and motors, and with enough of these systems fielded, Third Corps has effectively mastered how to clear the sky of FPV drones in the area it's operating in, specifically the ground north of Lyman.

The reason so few FPV drones are being encountered in that area comes down to a deliberate, layered air defense concept. A .50 caliber machine gun has an effective range of roughly a thousand meters, which means each air defense gun protects a radius of about two thousand meters around itself. These systems can be vehicle-mounted, trailer-mounted, or pallet-mounted, simply dropped off at the front and daisy-chained together. With four, six, or twelve of them working in concert, they move forward one piece at a time, like pieces on a chessboard, always keeping overlapping fire and mutual support between systems. Combined with electronic warfare vehicles and other anti-drone systems moving forward alongside them, this is exactly what has let Third Corps advance into a large area while encountering relatively few FPV drones, whether radio-guided or fiber-optic guided.

We always knew this was coming. When large formations move forward with heavy vehicle density, combining kinetic anti-drone systems with electronic warfare sweeps the FPVs from the sky, and that's exactly what's being seen now. We saw an earlier version of this at the Battle of Kursk, where wide-spectrum jamming alone worked well for the first couple of days, until fiber-optic drones showed up and jamming alone stopped being enough. What's happening now is the second phase of that same evolution: jammers combined with kinetic air defense actually sweeping the skies clear of FPVs, rather than jamming alone trying to hold the line.

FPV drones will always have a place on the battlefield going forward, but they've always been fragile, and as long as they can be seen, they can be dealt with. What's re-emerging now, as a direct result of clearing the skies, is conventional tube artillery, finally able to do what it does best at long range again, without nearly as much fear of the FPV threat hanging over it.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on Sept. 16 that Moscow had no intention of attacking Europe, echoing the Kremlin’s rhetoric in the weeks leading up to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On Jan. 28, 2022 — just 27 days before Russia launched the full-scale invasion — Lavrov similarly claimed that Moscow did not want war while warning that it would not allow its interests to be ignored.

Russia’s war against Ukraine had begun in 2014, when it illegally annexed Crimea and invaded parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. On Feb. 24, 2022, Moscow dramatically escalated the conflict, launching an all-out invasion from several directions and attempting to seize Kyiv.

Many of you know me as a defense reporter who spent years breaking bread with Ukrainian soldiers in trenches.

A blood illness gradually made both that work and military service impossible, so I poured all my passion, my experience, and my love for this country into this book.

It is a journey through more than 1,000 years of our people’s history—from the forest-dwelling Slavic pagan tribes to the princes of ancient Kyiv and the Cossacks of the steppe frontier, through the catastrophes of the 20th century, and into our own age of revolutions and resistance.

This is no history textbook, nor is it just another popular history of Ukraine. What emerged surprised even me. It is a lyrical, epic portrait of Ukraine—its folk memory, myths, symbols, age-old legends, songs, poetry, and sacred places such as Saint Sophia of Kyiv—all that binds people into a nation today.

Ukraine is a land with a deeply complicated history, coveted by many over the centuries, its tragic chapters marked by cruelty and bloodshed.

For centuries, this land has been watered with tears and has repeatedly lost its freedom. Yet Ukraine lived on. Today, Russian propaganda seeks to reduce Ukraine to “Russia’s backyard” or “Little Russia”—an “artificial state” with no culture, language, or history of its own.

In this book, I show that Ukraine has a far greater place in human history and a story to tell, particularly through the lives of some of its remarkable figures, such as Prince Volodymyr, who brought Christianity to the shores of ancient Kyiv, or Serhiy Korolyov, whose genius sent the first human being (and a beautiful Ukrainian song!) into space; or Georgiy Gongadze, the father of modern Ukrainian journalism, whose martyrdom changed this country’s fate forever.

And all of this is illustrated with drawings by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s great national poet and artist—spiritual father and prophet of the Ukrainian people.

This book is written from the perspective of my generation of Ukrainians, who came to believe in this country, resolved to make it a better place, and are now fighting to save it in Europe’s most terrible war of aggression since World War II.

For us, this is also a land of hope—the hope that we can finally break this cruel cycle of history, defend this country’s freedom and independence, and secure the right to pursue happiness in our own home.

My deepest hope is that one day people will say: “If you want to understand Ukraine, why it fought that war, and why it inspired so many around the world, read this book.”

My high school son told me this morning that a fellow football player was trying to convince him and his teammates that communism and socialism are good and capitalism is bad. We used the moment to strengthen his clear, fact-based response to this absurd position.

We discussed the tens of millions killed under communist regimes and how the United States fought throughout the Cold War to prevent communism’s spread.

The historical record provides conclusive evidence that communism and socialism have failed to deliver what they promise. The Soviet Union collapsed. Maoist China produced famine and mass poverty until it adopted market reforms. Cuba remains poor and repressive. Venezuela turned one of the world’s wealthiest countries into an economic disaster. These systems do not create equality or shared prosperity. They concentrate power and wealth in the hands of a ruling class while leaving everyone else poorer and less free.

Capitalism helped build the United States into the world’s greatest nation and only superpower. It rests on the principle that regardless of your background, hard work, initiative, and determination can produce prosperity and even wealth. @ConceptualJames

Parenting requires more than asking whether your children completed their homework. You must educate them, guide them, and prepare them to challenge bad ideas. If you allow algorithms, social media, and foreign-influenced platforms to raise and educate your children, do not be surprised when they believe stupid things.
