Your Excellency, as you prepare for your upcoming visit to the Maldives next week, I sincerely hope you will take the opportunity to hear directly from Maldivians.
We are not against foreign investment. We welcome investment and development. Our concern is the terms, transparency, and manner in which a very unpopular government is pursuing questionable deals with different companies on different major projects.
I want to respectfully assure you that the concerns I am raising are not based on speculation. I am giving you information that you may not be hearing from those negotiating the deal. I can tell you that more than half of the Cabinet is against the way this has been handled, and many are not fully aware of what has been agreed.
There are also serious questions surrounding the legal framework and the long-term ownership provisions. The Attorney General has publicly stated that a definitive agreement and enabling legislation are still required.
When you visit, I sincerely encourage you to speak directly and widely with political parties, legal experts, businesses, civil society, and ordinary Maldivians.
We welcome investment, Excellency. We simply want transparency, proper consultation, and an arrangement that protects the long-term interests of the Maldivian people.
