@Jam1377 I guess living in Latin America has “hardened them” in some ways.
They are fairly “selective” about where they go - but Angola is definitely bold (they originally looked at the Congo but decided against it).
Angola now has 4 Mennonite Colonies!
1. Lavoura Esperanza (Sommerfelders from MEX) - contract w the 'diamond mine'
2. Reinland (Old Colony from BOL)
3. Nordost (Old Colony from BOL)
4. Rosental (Old Colony from BOL)
3/4 are horse & buggy Old Colony Mennonites.
New Mennonite Colony in Angola marks the first new group of European Settlers in Africa since the end of the Colonial Era, excluding former groups returning post-independence to resettle like the Rhodesians or Portuguese. Is it the start of a new tropical European-African Empire?
@KingArthurWs Maybe I should not have posted them!
Once made a complex map of all the novel groups I’ve documented; but, began to question how that information might be utilized… decided against releasing it.
@DanONawrocki Not familiar with the land systems in either country, but would assume they prefer to buy land if possible.
Also assume once they get citizenship in Angola they will try and purchase land (likely leasing farmland to other Mennonites who do not have citizenship yet etc).
@EurocentricTuga@InfoAtJames Appreciate the info!! It’s wild, but I think I read about Ixiamas back in early high school on the Amish America blog lol.
@EurocentricTuga@InfoAtJames Yes. Ok good to know (I did have them saved as Ixiamas as well) . Maybe the photographer meant by "ex Amish" that the girl had in fact left Ixiamas? Not that there is some other group etc.
@Amphytrion__@ComteWasRight Most of these groups represent "highly religious" or "intense" subsets of Catholicism - reasonable to infer their TFRs are likely in the 2.5 to 3.5+ range.
But don’t know exact numbers (other than USA Latin mass being ~3.5-3.8). Worth looking inton!
@ComteWasRight With the Amish there is research showing individuals & families struggling economically/socially (correlated with many factors) are far more likely to “leave” - which reinforces Amish community stability.
Same is likely true for Mennonites to an extent.
@ComteWasRight Interesting theory:
Easy accessibility to Canada skews toward liberal families & those struggling economically (conservative members in this category being more likely to return to BOL).
May reduce “liberalization” in Bolivia. Albeit, networks abroad can also spread diff values
@michael_diamant Agreed. Perhaps after the Russo-Ukraine war ends they’d be interested in Menno “irredentism” of the old settlements (Molotschna & Chortitza).
They went to Russia to scout land back in the late 2000s or so. Think there is some hesitation given the past history there + conflicts.
