Instead, WARSH supported a strategy where the Federal Reserve effectively bought the bad debts from the banks and guaranteed their survival. He arranged the backstop that allowed institutions like AIG and Bear Stearns to be bailed out. This meant that the bankers kept their jobs, their bonuses, and their stock portfolios, while the cost of those bad debts was transferred to the taxpayer and the national debt. The middle class is now paying interest on that debt for decades, while the billionaires who caused the crash walked away wealthier than before.
