The realm of ancient Egyptian supernatural beings. Collecting daemons, genii, spirits, monsters, hybrids, ghosts, gremlins and all sorts of liminal beings.
Today is the final day of #Hedgehog week, so here is another one of our favourite hedgehogs from our collection. It's from ancient Egypt c. 1500 BC, where hedgehogs are thought to have symbolised rebirth 🦔
@LaraWeissRMO @RM_Oudheden @Ritaluc@SakhmetK Seriously, this jackal-head tailed serpent demon is at LEAST 6 feet long, and look below him to see what happens to those who fail to social distance... mwahahaha!
The German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer died #OTD in 1528.
His Rhinocerus print had a profound influence on the arts & was widely copied. 🦏It is not an accurate representation, though it was regarded as such throughout Europe into the late 18th c.
Print, 1515.
Our #objectoftheday is this fragment of a faience bowl, of unknown provenance. The decoration features a uraeus (rearing cobra) in front of what appears to be a cabin on a boat - we'd love to hear if people know of examples of Egyptian objects with a similar motif!
Local canine hero Swansea Jack (1930-1937) saved 27 people from drowning.
He is the ONLY dog to have been awarded 2 bronze medals (the canine VC) by the National Canine Defence League.
He may have lent his name to the nickname for local people – Swansea Jacks.
