Motherhood without your mother is an extreme sport. Especially as a nursing mum. I’m always tired, always hungry, almost always catching my breath. All the time. This phase is taking everything that I have and I still feel like I’m not catching up.
Back in 2023, I lived in a compound in Ekiti State where we all depended on the same well for water.
There was a woman who lived in an apartment very close to the well with her two children.
Her youngest was just about 8 or 9 months old. He couldn't walk yet, but he was already very active and loved crawling around the compound.
That baby could crawl almost everywhere.
Sometimes, he would even crawl towards the well.
Those of us in the compound were always uncomfortable whenever we saw him getting close to it. We would either carry him away or call his mother to come and get him.
But his mother didn't seem as worried about it as we were.
Then one afternoon, she was inside the house while the baby was outside playing.
There was nobody else outside at that particular moment.
The baby crawled around as usual.
And somehow, he made his way towards that same well.
This time, nobody was there to stop him.
He fell inside.
The saddest part is that his mother didn't even know anything had happened.
It wasn't until someone from the compound went to the well to fetch water that she looked inside and saw the baby lying lifeless in the water.
I still remember how painful that moment was.
A child who had been crawling around the compound and playing just minutes earlier was suddenly gone.
Till today, I think about how quickly an ordinary moment can turn into something a family will never recover from.
Sometimes, the things we become familiar with are exactly the things we should never become careless about.
That well was part of our everyday life.
But for that family, it became the place where they lost their child.
Please, if you have children around you, especially babies who are beginning to crawl, don't underestimate how quickly they can get into dangerous places.
A few seconds of inattention can sometimes become a lifetime of regret.
I honestly don’t know how far this post will go, but I need to try.
I have ₦600,000 left to pay from a ₦1.8m debt that came from a business deal that went badly. I’ve already paid ₦1.2m, sold properties and sacrificed almost everything valuable I had to get to this point.
The ₦600k is due by Saturday, and my house rent is also due soon. I’m trying to raise about ₦1m to clear the debt, sort out my rent and get back on my feet.
I’m not asking anyone to give me ₦1m.
I’m asking you to patronize our business.

A woman can sacrifice her career to raise your children and hold your home together, then you turn around and say she contributes “nothing” because she doesn’t earn a salary.
Her unpaid labour created the room for you to build your career. Don’t erase a woman’s contribution simply because it doesn’t come with a payslip.
Men, before you marry a Komodo dragon in the name of love and think that is how all women behave, just remember that Cristiano Ronaldo had an interview with Piers Morgan.
In that interview, he was asked, 'Excuse me, why, what is it that you love about Georgina?'
And his answer was a very simple answer that I found beautiful.
He said, 'She takes care of me. She takes care of the kids. She makes the house a home. Yet she has a great body and all of that stuff that I like, yes. But it's how she takes care of me.'"
Very simple. Very beautiful. Very sweet answer.
And lo and behold, the comments of the female rage and jealousy and envy: 'May this love never find me.'
All he talked about was what she did for him, him, him, him, him. Nothing about her.
'Okay, yeah, her body, but what about her ambition, her discipline, how smart she is, how whatever.'
And I was like, hold the door.
Wait. Wait.
Let's say there's a man in the street now, okay? And I'm like, 'Wow, he's so smart. He's so amazing. He's so wealthy, disciplined, ambitious.'
What does that do to me if he's not taking care of me?
Georgina could have been beautiful, smart, whatever, but not taking care of him, not taking care of the kids. Why would he love her?
He loves her because of the value and the comfort and the ease and the peace that she brings into his life.
Why do you love another person?
Because they're so smart for themselves?
I can appreciate your intellect from afar for yourself. But I don't need to love you for that if it doesn't add benefit to my life.
