@slot_yameta I recently found a bug with my RS3UI Mod when using Japanese text which caused instability. If you try the latest version, it should be ok! Thank you for your interest in my mod and your supplementary mod!
@SaGa_NeilB You could probably tune a model for it, but yeah in my experience the output is too long and formatting for technical details is inconsistent. And sometimes you need game knowledge to translate correctly, which AI won't have
@SaGa_NeilB One big reason to use "level up" in English is that it's much shorter than "level increased" or something like that. That's why it's a catchy term, and it really helps save UI space which is especially useful for games where the UI wasn't designed for other languages
@SaGa_NeilB Being from a small country, it is extremely rare to play anything in my native language, and at this point it'd just feel weird. Sometimes I see situations where JP->FI could translate more naturally than JP->EN. I see the value of native language, but it's just not realistic
@SaGa_NeilB I don't remember a single time I felt like English text in SaGa felt clunky or not fitting aside from a few errors in UI or mechanics related text. If a localization is bad, you don't need JP comparisons to see it, and I've seen some, but not in SaGa
@SaGa_NeilB I never thought of it that way, but the remaster certainly feels charmingly direct, like a SNES localization with limited space to work with. But it would feel off in 3D with voice acting. It would probably sound really funny and be hard to take seriously with old localization
@SaGa_NeilB Not knowing the language, you can naively assume it's cool even when it's not. But if the writing and production is good, that matters a lot more than coolness of the language.
@SaGa_NeilB As a beginner in Japanese, I've done some tedious translation work as a hobby where I make use of MTL, context and checking individual words and references, and I think that gets the correct meaning across. But a professional would do it much faster and better
@SaGa_NeilB This is definitely the main issue. SaGa isn't huge in the west but it's growing. There are still way more players that don't have particular interest in Japan than players bothered by localization, especially with RS2 RotS that brought in new fans
@SaGa_NeilB This kind of stuff takes a lot of effort that I feel like many don't appreciate. There's no one right answer, definitely takes some creativity to convey all the information naturally
@SaGa_NeilB I think it was necessary. While you can work around using pronouns, that can lead to very clumsy sentences or unreasonable amounts of repetition. If a character's gender is revealed part way through, then I'd try my best to avoid gendered pronouns until then
@SaGa_NeilB I've done some translations myself. Immediately decided to do it alongside playing the game so I'd have full context for everything. Especially Japanese is so hard to translate otherwise, but there's so many other things to consider too, as you said
@SaGa_NeilB For the most part I agree, but when people stream or do videos and everything is 3x speed, the visual clarity for the viewers really suffers. But there's not much choice, compared to new games that can make faster paced animations from the start
@SaGa_NeilB From what I've seen, people in 2000's already had the the impression that Kawazu isn't one to chase sales numbers. SaGa certainly could've been more popular if it was handled differently, but I'm glad it's a series that truly dares be itself!
@SaGa_NeilB I hope the success of Revenge of the Seven resulted in more resources being put towards making SaGa games! It's so cool that the series got more of a spotlight this time, and hopefully it won't be the last time
@SaGa_NeilB Mechs and the variety of races in general. Haniwa like enemies with Seven Blades (which you can absorb!) is also really cool. And Speculation is a great offensive formation like in RS3!
@SaGa_NeilB@SaGaGame Amazing combat with the United Attack / Showstopper dynamic and great variety in characters. Short repeatable stories are nice!
UI is very slow and unskippable cutscenes make replays less enjoyable when you run into the same scenes despite the variety
