Warner told Henry Cavill to announce his Superman return. Less than two months later, it was over.
In October 2022, Cavill posted an Instagram video confirming it, calling it "a very small taste of what's to come." Days later, James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to run DC Studios.
In December, he wrote: "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone."
The line that stung: "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life."
Gunn's side, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast: they sat down with Cavill in person, and Cavill asked to reveal it himself. Gunn calls him "a class act," and says that the day their deal closed, "they were announcing that Henry was back and I'm like 'What is going on?'" He called it "really unfair" to Cavill.
My read: by both men's accounts, the damage was done before Gunn walked in.
Who is more to blame for how this ended for Cavill: the old Warner regime, or the new DC Studios?

And both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz look great on set.
