“Everyone in South America knows someone who joined the Pentecostals. We all have an aunt, a neighbor, a cousin, who joined them and radicalized.
You already know who’s gonna join that sect. Your divorced aunt, she’ll be there. Your superstitious grandma, she’ll be speaking in tongues in no time.
The superstitious Catholic stereotype has been replaced with faith healing, prosperity gospel and 90’s evangelical ‘everything is demonic’ paranoia.
They prey on the emotional, the poor and the lonely. The schools, hospitals, orphanages and prisons don’t let Catholic priests minister anymore, only evangelical pastors are allowed in.
The cartels and gangs have all switched to the Evangelical world. It’s more lucrative & forgiving for them, and the emotional and financial promises of evangelicalism make recruiting easier.
They’re sectarian and intolerant of other beliefs. They build these insulated communities of ‘true believers’ where they can feel good about themselves for being ‘on the inside’, just like a cult”
-from my Colombian coworker when I asked him his thoughts on the Brazilian Pentecostal discourse on social media
