What’s better, 16 and 8 sided combo rolls or casino grade 6 sided single rolls?
Manually generating a 256-bit Bitcoin seed by rolling two plastic 16-sided dice and one 8-sided die 23 times, followed by one final 8-sided die roll vs. rolling a single casino-grade 6-sided die 100 times.
The combo method drops your total required actions from 100 events down to just 24 total shakes, cutting human fatigue by 76% to protect you from catastrophic miscounts, typos, and focus errors. Additionally, because 16 sided and 8 sided dice natively map directly to binary and hexadecimal, this combo method allows you to easily look up and choose your final seed words directly from a printed paper list rather than manually typing a tedious string of 100 ones and zeros into a hardware wallet to generate them.
While the molded plastic shapes suffer an estimated minimum physical bias loss of 0.091 bits compared to a perfect casino die, the setup still yields a net safety margin of 255.909 bits of real-world entropy, which remains 100% cryptographically unbreakable.
Regarding entropy loss with either method, even if your dice were so deeply flawed that you somehow lost a massive 50% of your total entropy to manufacturing bias, you would still be left with 128 bits of true entropy, which matches the cryptographic security of a standard 12-word seed phrase used as an industry standard by millions of hardware wallets today.
₿itcoin clubs, around the world, and I know some have already been doing this, (I’m looking at you, @DenverBitDevs …) should absolutely be allocating at least one session per month/quarter to hosting a “dice” night (or some entropy-generating equivalent) to teach people how to create their own unique seed phrase… 🤔😊😎🧡✅💯🎯
