What is a Human Rights Friendly School?
A Human Rights Friendly School places human rights at the heart of the learning experience and makes human rights an integral part of everyday school life. From the way decisions are made in schools, to the way people treat each other, to the curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer, right down to the very surroundings in which students are taught, the school becomes an exemplary model for human rights education.
Amnesty International supports schools and their wider communities in all regions of the world to build a global culture of human rights. Human Rights Friendly Schools aim to empower young people and promote the active participation of all members of the school community to integrate human rights values and principles into all areas of school life.
📢 #InCaseYouMissedIt | Postcard from Jerera📍
What happens when girls are equipped with knowledge about their rights, their bodies and their futures? They are better positioned to make informed decisions and stand up against violations.
Yesterday, Amnesty International Zimbabwe brought this conversation to Jerera, Zaka District, Masvingo Province, where over 60 students from three schools joined an interactive, belated commemoration of the #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild. Through our #EndFistula #RestoreDignity campaign, we created a safe space for meaningful conversations on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), child marriage and gender-based violence.
🎬 From a film screening and a powerful theatre performance by Pisa Pisa to interactive plenary discussions and an open girls’ circle chat, students explored the devastating consequences of child marriage, barriers to SRHR services, and the risks of unplanned pregnancies and obstetric fistula. They also learnt about the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Victim Friendly Unit and how to access its services.
Every girl deserves to learn, thrive and shape her own future. It starts with knowing her rights and having the power to exercise them.

10 people. Multiple injustices. Millions of actions for justice.
Every year, Amnesty International's Write for Rights campaign brings people around the world together to take action for individuals whose human rights have been violated.
This year, we're highlighting 10 people who have faced multiple injustices, from persecution for speaking out to enforced disappearance for standing up for what you believe in.
