Under the leadership of @POTUS@realDonaldTrump and @JMilei, US relations with Argentina are at an all-time high. I visited Buenos Aires this week to reaffirm and deepen this historic alignment.
Argentina is one of the world’s richest countries in both human capital and natural resources, and American capital and know-how can help unlock its vast potential for mutual benefit. I was honored and delighted to meet with President @JMilei, Foreign Minister @pabloquirno, Economy Minister @LuisCaputoAR, and other key ministers and economic leaders, and our meetings were both substantive and exceptionally warm.
¡Un fuerte abrazo al gobierno y al pueblo de la gran República Argentina de parte de un amigo de toda la vida! 🇺🇸🤝🇦🇷
The power of water is awesome. Paraguay and Brazil harnessed the power of the mighty Paraná River at the Itaipú Dam, one of the world’s engineering marvels. This project was only a dream when I lived in Paraguay as a boy in the 1970s, and it was a true joy to visit the completed project now as US Deputy Secretary of State.
And it was even better to visit with Paraguayan President @SantiPenap to announce that US investors have signed a deal to build a data center nearby drawing on the abundant hydroelectric energy. This deal has the potential to be the largest foreign private investment in Paraguay’s history and thus to deepen the longstanding ties between our countries. 🇺🇸🤝🇵🇾
For 5 years of my life (ages 8-13), my home address was 1776 Avenida Mariscal López, the US Embassy in Asunción, Paraguay. It was very moving to return to that address today as Deputy Secretary of State. The iconic midcentury house I grew up in was demolished several years ago and replaced with a much larger modern Embassy office building so it was disorienting to address the Embassy staff on the site of what had been my childhood home. I was touched that they gave me a small piece of stone from the original Embassy staircase—the very stairs my father walked up almost every day on his way to work during those five years. 🇺🇸🤝🇵🇾
The iconic Palacio de los López, the Presidential Palace in Asunción, sits on the banks of the Paraguay River where the Spanish founded the city in 1537. Yesterday, President @SantiPenap, Vice President @AllianaPedro, Foreign Minister @rramirezlezcano, and other key government officials welcomed our delegation into the Palacio for an excellent discussion on a broad range of bilateral issues including investment, trade, and security. The Foreign Minister and I then signed agreements on aerial counternarcotics cooperation and border control. Paraguay is a great partner! 🇺🇸🤝🇵🇾
Last February, @SecRubio attended the CARICOM Leaders’ Conference in Saint Kitts and Nevis and committed our Administration to deepen our political, security, and economic ties with the region. We kept that promise by organizing a Caribbean Dialogue in Washington, in which I was delighted to participate along with key regional leaders. The US is a Caribbean nation, and our ties to the countries in this region are both deep and personal.

I’m excited to be heading to Paraguay and Argentina next week for discussions with political, security, and economic leaders about opportunities to deepen cooperation between our countries. In particular, we’ll be discussing with US businesses and investors how our capital and know-how can foster economic prosperity for them and for us.
And this trip will have deep personal resonance for me, as I grew up in Paraguay and attended the American School of Asunción for 5 years (1972-77) as the son of the US Ambassador. I’m grateful to @POTUS@realDonaldTrump and @SecRubio for this opportunity to advance our diplomatic objectives in a part of the world that’s part of the fabric of my own life. 🇺🇸🇵🇾🇦🇷
