I went downstairs and found Mercia beneath an ordinary church

I’ve just stepped beneath St Wystan’s Church in Repton, Derbyshire, into an Anglo-Saxon crypt surviving from one of Mercia’s great religious centres.

I expected the royal connection to be what stayed with me. Instead, it was the four stone columns. Their spiral carving makes this tiny underground room feel almost handmade rather than monumental.

The crypt is thought to have begun as a baptistery before becoming a royal mausoleum, though its history changed over time.

Standing between those worn columns, I stopped thinking about kingdoms for a moment. What caught me was the mason’s work: someone cutting those spirals carefully enough that we can still follow them with our eyes.
