This is a real quote from Ian Bremmer in the video below:

"You could say that Graham Platner is the candidate for literally everybody, because on the one hand he has the policies that appeal to the progressive left—and he has the personal character, treatment of women that should appeal to people that like Trump."

The assumptions embedded in this statement are remarkable.

Platner is a hardened leftist and self-described communist. That he is also a Nazi enthusiast and a bad person (jerks off in public porta potties, says Purple Heart recipients deserved to be killed by the Taliban, etc.) does not endear him to right-of-center voters who like the president or may be more inclined to vote for Susan Collins.

Why is it that so many highly esteemed self-styled "centrist" pundits always seem to suggest that right-leaning voters are motivated by candidates who exhibit bad character, while left-leaning voters are motivated exclusively by policy?

I would posit that there are quite a few left-leaning voters (and a ton of left-leaning activists, staffers, and operatives) attracted to Platner precisely because he is the kind of guy who would get a Totenkopf tattoo to exhibit his ruthlessness—and who believe Democrats need more dirtbags willing to spit in the eyes of the all-powerful Jews or Zionists or Epstein Class or whatever who control everything.

Platner is not who you nominate if you want to peel off male Trump voters and ensure the easiest path to victory against Collins. This is a bullshit narrative. The easiest way to peel off votes from the other party is to nominate someone willing to moderate on policy—like what Talarico is at least attempting to do in Texas.

Maine is a very blue state. They are making this hard for themselves because they believe they can afford to and this is exactly who they want to elevate. Platner and the hard-left operatives behind him understand that he can perform markedly worse than even Kamala Harris did in 2024 and still defeat Collins.

The bar is extremely low. And they still only have a 50-50 shot at clearing it.
