Over the weekend, two University of Mississippi, Ole Miss, students were found dead, and the drug kratom was found at the scene, although it is unclear whether it was involved.

The students were identified as Robert Strang, a 20-year-old junior from Atlanta, and Aidan Hamilton, an 18-year-old freshman from Colorado.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics announced that law enforcement was investigating the deaths.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit Executes Search Warrant at Oxford Business

OXFORD, MISS. — On Thursday, September 24, 2026, the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit received information regarding the alleged sale of illegal substances from a retail business located within the City of Oxford.

During the investigation, Metro Narcotics agents were able to conduct a controlled purchase of illegal substances from the business. Based upon evidence obtained during the investigation, agents applied for and were granted a search warrant.

Law enforcement officers subsequently executed the search warrant at Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store, located in the 100 block of Heritage Drive in Oxford.

During the search, agents recovered more than 500 units of kratom, along with an assortment of THC cartridges, gummies, and other suspected narcotics. Kratom has been prohibited from possession, distribution, and sale within the City of Oxford since 2019.

Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, of Oxford, and Islam Mohamed, 18, of Oxford, were arrested and charged with possession of Schedule I controlled substances with intent to distribute. In 2022, the business owner, Amer Alowdi, 40 years old, was indicted for trafficking narcotics. Alowdi fled the country before prosecution. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

For years, our community has taken a clear position regarding these types of products. We have educated businesses, conducted compliance checks, and worked aggressively to prevent illegal and potentially dangerous substances from being sold in Oxford.

Despite those efforts, some individuals and businesses continue to put profit ahead of the safety of the people who live, work, and attend school in our community.

Our message is direct: if you choose to illegally sell these substances in our community, expect law enforcement to come looking for you. We will investigate. We will obtain warrants. We will seize illegal products, and we will hold those responsible accountable.

This investigation does not end with these arrests. These individuals and this business are not necessarily the only people involved in the illegal distribution of these products, and

they should not expect to be the last arrests made as our enforcement efforts continue.

We are extremely grateful for the hard work of the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and every local, state, and federal law enforcement partner assisting with these investigations.

Our responsibility is to protect this community. We will continue pursuing those who knowingly place dangerous and illegal substances into it.

ICYMI: For the first time in nearly 50 years, the United States has delivered an armaments package to Guatemala as the two countries expand cooperation against drug trafficking and organized crime.

According to @usembassyguate, Guatemala financed the weapons package as part of a broader military modernization effort. From 2024 through 2027, Guatemala says its purchases from the U.S. will exceed $85 million, in addition to an infrastructure project involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

U.S. Southern Command calls the delivery a “historic milestone” in the U.S.-Guatemala security partnership and says the equipment will directly strengthen Guatemala’s defense capabilities against regional drug trafficking and organized crime.

SOUTHCOM: “This delivery reinforces Guatemala’s vital role within the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition.”

The Guatemalan Embassy says the investment reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities and working alongside the U.S. to combat organized crime and drug trafficking across the region.

ICYMI: Five cartel drones taken down as the U.S. and Mexico tout a series of new blows against organized crime on both sides of the border.

Mexico’s Defense Ministry says its Army disabled five drones being used by organized crime for drug and human trafficking during a two-week binational operation called “High Eagle” along the Tijuana-San Diego border.

One of those drones was initially detected on the U.S. side before crossing into Mexico, where Mexican troops neutralized it after receiving information from @CBP.

The operation also resulted in one arrest and the seizure of a firearm, magazines and ammunition.

And it wasn’t just drones.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico says the two countries also seized 1.3 tons of methamphetamine, 10 kilograms of fentanyl and 27 tons of chemical precursors — while stopping weapons from being trafficked to the cartels.

Mexican and U.S. officials met afterward to evaluate the operation, saying it disrupted criminal activity along the border and strengthened information sharing between the two countries.

La operación fue ejecutada esta madrugada por la Policía Nacional y se llevó a cabo en conjunto con las tropas norteamericanas y la DEA, que dejó como resultado más de 30 personas detenidas en Guayaquil, Daule, Samborondón, Ventanas, Babahoyo, Puebloviejo, Vinces y Machala.

Esta organización no tiene ningún vínculo con bandas locales. Tenía relación directa con el CJNG. La investigación tomó cerca de ocho meses. La estructura se dedicaba al acopio, intermediación, distribución, transporte y comercialización de grandes cantidades de droga proveniente de Colombia, que pretendía ser enviada por vía marítima desde puertos de Guayaquil y Machala hacia Centroamérica, Estados Unidos y Europa.
Para llegar hasta esta estructura, a lo largo de este año, ha habido una afectación de USD 322 millones entre todos los cargamentos de droga decomisados.

Más de 320 miembros dea Policía Nacional y 50 miembros del Comando Sur fueron parte de esta operación.

The Drug Enforcement Administration - @DEAHQ and @ONDCP have been sending out warnings about these growing national security and public health threats to Americans, so please spread the word.

The larger lesson is clear: the synthetic-drug threat is evolving rapidly and we are losing historic amounts of our citizens We have gone from K2/Spice and bath salts to fentanyl, carfentanil, nitazenes and now emerging opioids such as cychlorphine. We also have illicit xylazine and metatomodine, very dangerous substances, being mixed in these drug cocktails, Criminal drug networks can alter chemistry faster than traditional detection, scheduling and public-awareness systems can respond.
