It is interesting when smart people who know next-to-nothing about the Bible and the history of ancient Israel and early Christianity put on the persona of someone who can wax authoritatively about it. Such is the case with Michael Shermer here.

Polygamous relationships (more specifically polygynous relationships, i.e., multiple wives) are something Israel shared with its ancient Near Eastern environment. But what you both seem not to recognize is that embedded already in Israel's understanding of creation of "male and female" (Genesis 1:27) and the creation of woman and the institution of marriage between man and woman (Genesis 2:21-24) are the seeds for the elimination of polygamous or polyamorous relationships.

That is what Jesus told his followers (Mark 10:2-12; Matthew 19:3-8) when he extended the moral logic of God's intentional creation of two-and-only-two sexes per Genesis 1:27 and 2:21-24 (in the latter woman is uniquely imaged in the ANE as the missing other-half and sexual complement or counterpart to man) as the foundation for limiting the number of partners in a sexual union to two, whether concurrently (no polygamy or indeed any form of polyamory) or serially (no remarriage after illegitimate divorce).

Per Jesus, God's deliberate design of two (and only two) sexual counterparts leads to a moral conclusion about the number of partners allowable in a sexual union: two. When the two divinely ordained halves of the sexual spectrum-- male and female or man and woman--unite to form a single sexual whole (where the extremes of each sex are moderated and the gaps filled), a third party or more becomes neither necessary nor desirable.

Moreover, Jesus explained polygyny (multiple wives) and any-matter divorce for men as God's temporary accommodation to human "hardness of heart," which accommodation he was now revoking based precisely on a standard set in creation per Genesis 1:27 and 2:24.

Let me spell it out for you: It is precisely the rigorous opposition to every and any form of homosexual practice by ancient Israel, early Judaism, and early Christianity--exceeding anything else in the ancient Near East and Greco-Roman Mediterranean basin--that establishes the moral logic for a rejection of more than one living sex partner at the same time or over time.

Ironically, it is people like you who, in promoting homosexual unions, eliminate not only the notion of a divinely ordained sexual binary but also thereby any rational objection to more than one sexual partner concurrently--i.e., the very sorts of sexual relationships that you cite from the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament in rejecting the Bible's moral authority. Oh the ignorance.
