Black August is an annual commemoration and prison-based holiday to remember Black political prisoners, Black freedom struggles in the United States and beyond, and to highlight Black resistance against racial, colonial and imperialist oppression. It takes place during the entire calendar month of August.
Black August was initiated by the Black Guerilla Family in San Quentin State Prison in 1979 when a group of incarcerated people came together to commemorate the deaths of Jonathan P. Jackson and George Jackson at San Quentin State Prison.
You read that homeless women are being raped and immediately blamed homeless men because you associate violence with poverty, whole time the primary perpetrators or rape of homeless women AND MEN are housed people (and cops) who lure them with promises of food, shelter and work.
Peeping the replies defending the crime bill and I just need people to be honest that they're also in favor of mass incarceration.
Like, let it all out there. You actually think it's fine that 1/3 of your men get incarcerated at some point.
You think it's a worthy tradeoff.
Rest in Power to Johanna Fernández. Many of us knew her first & foremost as a dedicated fighter for the freedom of Mumia Abu Jamal.
The Young Lords: A Radical History is absolutely one of the very best books we've had the pleasure of discussing with its author since we started this podcast
History has turned another page.
The installation of the Regent & Queen Regent of the late King of Dagbon is more than a ceremony. It is a symbol of continuity, tradition, & hope for the future of the Kingdom.
These are moments that will be remembered for generations.
Just like his late father. May the current Regent of Dagbon leave behind a legacy of wisdom, peace and progress. May his reign be remembered as one of the finest in Dagbon's history. 🦁

It kills me seeing Black feminists who generalize Black men as terrorists and threats to Black women and children be the voices of Black radicalism. I’m seeing Black women who express open disdain for Black men on any given day announce Black August events. Demonizing Black men and then acting like a champion of political prisoners. It’s really nasty for our movements out here man.
It was literally a detention facility for Black boys. But you see how they have to degender the story when it's about Black males in order to garner sympathy? Whenever Black males specifically experience harm, its always recasted as "Black people" to hide the gendered nature of racism.
Over 1,000 Black feminists signed a letter decrying Obama’s MBK initiative saying that a focus on Black boys would take attention away from Black girls. Can’t win for losing.
It would be great if people learned the true history of Black August before they start teaching it. Just because you call yourself 'anti-imperialist,' 'grassroots,' or 'nonprofit,' it doesn't give you the right to co-opt Black August.
