DES S.T.E.M lab is our program at Dade Elementary school that engages in hands on learning & S.T.E.M challenges. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
October's 4th grade highlights. We've been so busy in STEM. We had a spooky time making spider parachutes/glider & our own Monster. We learned about spiders using their webs to fly & we made monsters to go along with the book I need my monster! These guys are super creativeπ·οΈπͺπ§
DES 3rd graders did an amazing job with the bat wing challenge last week. They had to design some wings for their bat that would help it fly the furthest! After we tested our bats wing they had to attach the bat to a cave roof using limited supplies. Great job guys! π¦
Check out our DES 3rd graders making spider pulleys! We learned about simple machines and how pulleys work. Then they made a pulley that help them get their spider up to it's web! They had a lot of fun with this STEM! π·οΈ πΈοΈ π I love spooky season!
Our 5th graders shook things up with a fun Earthquake STEM!They had to build a 3 story structure that would stay standing while we shook it for 30 seconds in a pan of Jell-O.All they had was, card stock,10 straws,&12 inches of tape. We've had so much fun with this challenge!ππ₯Ό
Check out our 4th grade scientist! They conducted a rain cloud experiment were we tested 3 cotton ball clouds. First we made hypothesis for how many drops of water each cloud would hold. Then we used droppers to drop water on the cloud until it rained & recorded the data. π§οΈππ₯Ό
These 3rd graders Rocked this edible rock cycle challenge! We made a sedimentary rock by mixing together small pieces of starburst, then we squished it flat using heat & pressure to make a metamorphic rock. Last we melted our rock then let it cool to form an igneous rock. Yum!πͺ¨π
Mrs.Rose's 4th grade did a fun Save Fred the worm Stem challenge. They had to save Fred from a sinking ship but they couldn't touch him with their hands, they had to use paperclips. They couldn't squish or hurt Fred in the process. They did a GREAT job!
Shout out to Mrs.Valtierra's 3rd grade science class! They have been very busy learning about heat transfer, science tools and the scientific method! These guys love science! π¬ππ‘οΈπ₯
check out 5th grade's Apple balance race! They had to make a device to help them balance an apple on their head as they raced. They only had a piece of cardstock, 24 in' of string , 4 pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks or straws & 12 in' of tape for their device. This was so FUN!
Our 4th graders did an Amazing job with this 3D name plate STEM challenge. They got to choose pipe cleaners, paper, popsicle stick or straws to make the letter of their name out of. They had 12 in' & glue if needed to make their letters stand up own their own. We had so much fun!
Check out these 3rd grade engineers! They made their own crayon box that would hold 8 crayons. They only had 2 pieces of paper & 12 in' of tape to make their boxes out of. Their box had to have a lid to keep they crayons from falling out. These guys are so creative! Great job!
We just wrapped up an awesome year in the STEM lab! This was my first year teaching STEM & I loved it. These kids here at DES are so creative! I'm really proud of how hard they worked this year. I'm ready for summer but I will miss these guys & I'm very excited for next year!
Here are the 5th graders end of the 3D printed keychains that they designed themselves. I saw some amazing designs!! This was such a fun project that I hope they remember forever! I'm going to miss these 5th graders. They are so creative & I know they are off to great things!
Our 3rd graders learned all about the science behind a parachute last week. They had several different materials to choose from to make a parachute that would help get their pipe cleaner person to the ground safely! They had so much fun testing their parachutes!πͺ
